Many know that CrossFit has become something that I have put a lot of heart and soul into since I joined this gym. For those that are wondering what CrossFit is, its a combination of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, & cardio exercises combined in one workout to give someone a high intensity workout in a group class setting.
This past Saturday, the owners of the CrossFit gym I go to here in Las Vegas hosted the 1st Annual Fit Challenge: Las Vegas. Las Vegas has 3 CrossFit gyms and we wanted to have a fun event to see who's the fittest male & female in Las Vegas. The Fit Challenge consisted of 4 groups: Male prescribed, Female prescribed, Male scaled, & Female scaled. There were 3 workouts that us competitors were to compete in. One at 10am, another at 1pm, and the last one at 4pm. The 1st WOD (workout of the day) was an obstacle course. We had to do a 250m farmer's walk (a farmer's walk is holding weights in each hand while running)with 45lbs water jugs, 250m run with a 75lbs sandbag, and end it with a 250m run. This obstacle course had tires we had to go over as well as a huge sand hill that we had to go through.
The first WOD was harder than I thought. It made it harder for our heat (since we were the first one) to get through it fast due to the fact that we had to go through the sand hill first...allowing us to pack the sand firmly for the following heats. I came in 3rd place in my heat, but 12th overall after this first event. Honestly, I was kinda of upset that my time was horrible (about 45 seconds slower than the 1st place person). The 2nd WOD for the day was 3 rounds for time, each round consisted of 15 - 30" box jumps, 12 - 115lbs overhead-anyhows, 9 - 135lbs cleans. Box jumps are one of my fortes so I was confident that I would do good in this event. I placed 2nd in my heat and 4th overall in this WOD...bumping me up to 4th place overall after the 2 event combined.
The third WOD was an 8 minute round that we had to do as many pull ups or 250lbs deadlifts. We could choose what we wanted to do and how many we wanted before switched....or we could just stick with just one exercise if the other was hard for us. Due to the fact that I had pulled my hamstring about 3 weeks ago, deadlifts were hard for me, so I stuck with doing pull ups which I only did 74 of them and 4 deadlifts, giving me a total of 78 reps. I was disappointed in my performance, but it was caused by my hand ripping from doing the pull ups on the bar.
After the 3rd WOD, the owners of the gym got together to tally the scores up. The way they scored the last WOD was the 1st place person would get 100 seconds knocked off their combined time for the first 2 events, the 2nd place 99 seconds, and so on. I didn't place in the top 3, but I did get 4th place. I was proud of myself since there were guys that were bigger than me, guys that looked more fit than me, and guys that have been doing CrossFit longer than me. The 1st & 3rd place came from the gym I go to, but the 2nd place guy came from one of the other CrossFit gyms. Since I was technically the 3rd winner from our gym since I came in 4th, I got a spot on our CrossFit Las Vegas Affiliate team to compete in the CrossFit Games in July that will be held in Aromas, CA. I'm excited for this event and I'm hoping to get time off from work to compete in this CrossFit games and represent our CrossFit Las Vegas gym!
