A new year has begun (well, a couple days ago) and I thought it would be nice if I could be a better blogger. 2010 was a good year overall for me. Like any year, it had its ups and downs. As 2011 begins there’s a lot to look forward to.
I’m blessed to have a great job that I actually enjoy doing (I know not many people can say that). Some goals I have set as a trainer at CrossFit Las Vegas is to better myself when it comes to training and strength. I also want to be able to clean up my diet and stick with it diligently. The most important goal I have for this year is to be a better coach and instructor. Better myself by being harder on the members to push themselves, better myself when it comes to learning about the fitness & health part of CrossFit.
I’ve entered into a great relationship with the man of my dreams, Mitchell McConkie. He has been a huge blessing in my life and I couldn’t have been any luckier or blessed. We got engaged on December 13, 2010 and we are planning on making it official later on during the Summer or Fall of 2011. As I start this new year, I want to work on being a better fiancĂ© by being more understanding, more compassionate, more selfless, more loving, and better at communicating. I should never be the reason for his unhappiness and if that’s the case, I have failed and will need to fix it as soon as I can. I know I’m only human and a perfect relationship will consist of fights and arguments so I’m willing to accept that we will have those moments.
My family has always been a great support to me and I’ve been blessed to have a loving family. This new year, I want to better my relationship with every member of my family. I need to keep in touch with my parents and see how they’re doing. I need to follow up on my siblings and their family to make sure I know what they’ve been up to and how life’s treating them. A good son/brother knows what’s going on in each of their lives and how they’re doing.
As a friend, I have set goals to make time for those that I care and love. I want to make my relationships with my friends stronger and it can’t only be done through Facebooking or texting. I need to be better at setting some time apart to hang out with them or pick up the phone and actually talk to them over the phone. Nothing’s better than to hear a voice of a good friend, right?
When it comes to myself, I have set some goals to help me get out of debt. Yes….that is a huge thing that has been weighing me down for years and I need to buckle down, stop spending money on foolish things and get the important things out of the way. I also want to be able to improve myself physically…..I want to get stronger, add some bulk and tone up my body. With that said, I will have to be more strict on my diet and not have them “cheat days” often as I do. Hahaha!!!
This will be a nice rollercoaster ride in 2011, but I know it will be one filled with a lot of good thrills! I will do my best to be on top of my blog postings as the year goes on. Cheers to this new year and many more to come!

Christmas Blah
It's not much of a Christmas feeling this Christmas Eve. Tried to make it the best that I could, but I guess when things happen that you really can't control it fires at you even when you're trying to please both sides. I stomach feels twisted, not in the cheery mood I thought I was going to be in, not spending quality time with the one person I love the most....pretty much this Christmas Eve sucks. Just hoping that tomorrow will be a better day.....I guess I'm not going to hold my breathe on that one.

1st Annual Fit Challenge: Las Vegas
Many know that CrossFit has become something that I have put a lot of heart and soul into since I joined this gym. For those that are wondering what CrossFit is, its a combination of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, & cardio exercises combined in one workout to give someone a high intensity workout in a group class setting.
This past Saturday, the owners of the CrossFit gym I go to here in Las Vegas hosted the 1st Annual Fit Challenge: Las Vegas. Las Vegas has 3 CrossFit gyms and we wanted to have a fun event to see who's the fittest male & female in Las Vegas. The Fit Challenge consisted of 4 groups: Male prescribed, Female prescribed, Male scaled, & Female scaled. There were 3 workouts that us competitors were to compete in. One at 10am, another at 1pm, and the last one at 4pm. The 1st WOD (workout of the day) was an obstacle course. We had to do a 250m farmer's walk (a farmer's walk is holding weights in each hand while running)with 45lbs water jugs, 250m run with a 75lbs sandbag, and end it with a 250m run. This obstacle course had tires we had to go over as well as a huge sand hill that we had to go through.
The first WOD was harder than I thought. It made it harder for our heat (since we were the first one) to get through it fast due to the fact that we had to go through the sand hill first...allowing us to pack the sand firmly for the following heats. I came in 3rd place in my heat, but 12th overall after this first event. Honestly, I was kinda of upset that my time was horrible (about 45 seconds slower than the 1st place person). The 2nd WOD for the day was 3 rounds for time, each round consisted of 15 - 30" box jumps, 12 - 115lbs overhead-anyhows, 9 - 135lbs cleans. Box jumps are one of my fortes so I was confident that I would do good in this event. I placed 2nd in my heat and 4th overall in this WOD...bumping me up to 4th place overall after the 2 event combined.
The third WOD was an 8 minute round that we had to do as many pull ups or 250lbs deadlifts. We could choose what we wanted to do and how many we wanted before switched....or we could just stick with just one exercise if the other was hard for us. Due to the fact that I had pulled my hamstring about 3 weeks ago, deadlifts were hard for me, so I stuck with doing pull ups which I only did 74 of them and 4 deadlifts, giving me a total of 78 reps. I was disappointed in my performance, but it was caused by my hand ripping from doing the pull ups on the bar.
After the 3rd WOD, the owners of the gym got together to tally the scores up. The way they scored the last WOD was the 1st place person would get 100 seconds knocked off their combined time for the first 2 events, the 2nd place 99 seconds, and so on. I didn't place in the top 3, but I did get 4th place. I was proud of myself since there were guys that were bigger than me, guys that looked more fit than me, and guys that have been doing CrossFit longer than me. The 1st & 3rd place came from the gym I go to, but the 2nd place guy came from one of the other CrossFit gyms. Since I was technically the 3rd winner from our gym since I came in 4th, I got a spot on our CrossFit Las Vegas Affiliate team to compete in the CrossFit Games in July that will be held in Aromas, CA. I'm excited for this event and I'm hoping to get time off from work to compete in this CrossFit games and represent our CrossFit Las Vegas gym!

Racing For The Cure
What a great experience to be able to do something for a good cause!! For the first I did a 5k for something worth running for. The Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure was a successful event! CrossFit Las Vegas decided to get together to race to "save the ta-tas". LoL!!
We got to downtown Las Vegas and there were just thousands of people. It was overwhelming to see how many people turned out for this event. I can't think of anyone I know that have suffered from breast cancer, but my great grandfather and grandfather both passed away from prostate cancer. I also have a dear friend of mine that is suffering through this disease today. As I stood there watching the cancer survivors walk down the sidewalk before the race started, thoughts raced through my mind of my great grandfather, grandfather, & dear friend and the sufferings they had/have to go through.
I told myself that I have never ran 5k straight and that I was going to run the whole way without stopping in honor of my loved ones & those survivors and victims of this disease. I felt my calves burning as I did the run, but I never did stop running. After finishing the race it was a great feeling to know that I helped out in a little way. I look forward to next year's run!!
The CrossFit Las Vegas Team: Wendy, myself, Joe & Caylin, Renee, Jason, Jessica, & Tamra

This is what I was trying to save....LoL!! Jess and I like to act silly

I felt like Superman with this pink cape after the run!

CrossFit Level 1 Certification!
I joined CrossFit back in August of 2008. CrossFit was something that I wasn't even interested in, but my former roommate, Ali'i told me about it and I was very hesitate to check it out. I ended up going to CrossFit one day just to check it out. The workout was a butt kicker, but after the workout I felt great. I told myself and the trainers that I was going to come only once a week, but within that one week, I went 4 times so I decided to join the monthly membership that they had instead of paying for the single classes.
Over the months, I've been going to CrossFit, trying to better myself when it comes to breaking personal records with olympic weight lifting, named WOD (workout of the day), as well as diet and nutrition. I've seen a lot of improvement and its the best feeling to see that I'm bettering myself as an athlete & person.
I was blessed to be given a scholarship from the owners of the CrossFit that I go to here in Las Vegas for The CrossFit Level 1 Trainers' Certification Class. This is a class that cost $1000 and I was able to do it for free. The certification was incredible. The lectures were very informative and interesting to realize the importance of everything in CrossFit. The group work on form and technique with the fundamental movements was a great way to eye out the wrongs and rights when training people. Finally, the workouts during the certification were butt kickers, but great to know that I was pushed to my intensity in a safe manner.
I'm so lucky to have the opportunity to train others since going to the gym and working out has been one of my hobbies and passions since I've been here in Vegas. I love the fact of having a job that I absolutely love doing. Its great to know that the owners of CrossFit Las Vegas have faith in me to become a trainer and build the community that's at and will be at CrossFit Las Vegas.

All I Need Is Hope
The dictionary defines HOPE as "the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best". We all go through times when we feel like we can't go on and just want to give up on life. Sometimes, its hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it seems like the tunnel is never ending. I feel like the harder I work, the harder I get hit with things. I may think I'm strong to press forward, but seems like I've been stationary like pushing a 1 ton boulder.
At this point in my life I feel like all I have left to feel is HOPE. The HOPE that things will get better. The HOPE for the ability to conquer my trials & tribulations. The HOPE that I will be able to reach the end of the tunnel.
